Inclusion
Caedmon Primary is an inclusive school in that we aim to provide a range of support for children with special educational or additional needs. All children are valued, respected and welcomed to our school whatever their additional educational need. We will support their learning and ensure they are fully included in all school activities, making full use of externally provided facilities where appropriate.
We are able to provide an environment which enables access for all pupils regardless of their need. Our school has been adapted for disabled pupils. Wheel chair access is provided through most external and all internal doors. There is also a toilet with disabled access.
Special Educational Needs
We recognise that there are four broad areas of need:-
- Communication and interaction (language and autism spectrum disorder)
- Cognition and learning (general learning and specific learning difficulties)
- Physical and sensory
- Behavioural, emotional and social
Within every school there will always be a number of pupils who, for a variety of reasons, are classed as having special educational needs (SEN). Should your child’s teacher have any concerns regarding your child, he/she will arrange to see you to discuss these concerns. This may also include the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) Mrs White. Our aim is to include parents in the early identification, assessment, planning and reviewing of special educational needs for their particular child. This means that parents will be involved at every stage in the decision-making process in respect of their child’s needs.
When a special educational need has been identified, the child’s name is placed on our Special Needs Register. A SEN Support Plan is then written for each child, detailing the provision that they will receive and also the progress that is expected. Each child’s progress is carefully monitored and recorded and the SEN Support Plans are reviewed every term.
In addition it may be necessary to gain further advice from outside agencies such as the Learning Support Service, The Speech and Language Therapy Service, the Educational Psychologist or CAMHS. The involvement of such specialists would always be organised following consultation with parents. At certain stages, a child’s teacher may design a programme of work or provision specific to the child’s individual needs.
The school’s SENDCO is Mrs M. White, who can be contacted via our school office on (01642) 453187.
Complaints
In the first instance, parents are encouraged to speak with their child’s class teacher if they have any concerns. If however parents feel that their issues have not been resolved then they can make an appointment with the SENDCO, a senior member of staff or the Headteacher. If the matter remains unresolved then parents should reference the complaints procedure.
